History of Anaheim

In 1857, The City of Anaheim was founded by fifty German-American families. The name "Anaheim" is derived from a combination of "Ana" - the Santa Ana River and "heim" - meaning home in German language. The group bought a land from Juan Pacifico Ontiveros' and started the Anaheim Vineyard Company. The primary objective of the community was grape and wine-making. City Hall was built in 1871.

In 1924, Ku Klux Klan reign began as Klan members were elected to the Anaheim City Council. The Klanmen reign had rendered the control of the by German American business and civic elite. The Klan in Anaheim quickly collapsed in 1925 and the local government was took over by Kkan opponents. During the opening years of the 20th century, Anaheim was a huge residential rural area inhabited by farmers and orange groves. Later, when Disneyland opened in 1955, Anaheim evolved into a thriving tourist destination.
